The Dangers of Low Carb Diets

There are different diets out there but the most popular remains to be the “Low Carb” diet. As the term suggests, you are required to limit carbohydrate consumption daily to lose weight or to treat obesity problems. Foods high in carbohydrates include (but not limited to) rice, pasta, bread and anything made with flour or sugar, grains and starchy vegetables like corn and potatoes. In a low-carb diet, you are supposed to take more foods that contain a higher percentage of proteins and fats such as meat, poultry, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds and peanuts.

By limiting your carbohydrate intake drastically, your body goes into a metabolic state called Ketosis, where it burns its own fat for fuel and this poses a threat as it can cause your organs to fail over time. If you are in a state of ketosis, your body gets energy from ketones (little carbon fragments created by the breakdown of fats) and then you crave less and you feel full longer making you eat less than you might otherwise.

Now as far as dangers are concerned; low-carb diets can cause health problems such as kidney failure. When you consume too much protein, you put a strain on the kidneys. Another health problem that may stem from a low-carb diet is high cholesterol. It is a known fact that a high-protein diet is linked to high cholesterol. This may also lead to an increased risk of developing stroke, heart disease and cancer. Why cancer? Because when you avoid foods with carbohydrates, you are also avoiding the vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants they contain.

Osteoporosis is another risk for diets high in protein because they have been known to cause the body to excrete more calcium than normal through the urine. This can also lead to kidney stones. Other side effects of low-card diet include nausea, foul breath and dull appetite.
